As the child of a "white" Franco-European parent and a racialized "brown" or "Black" parent, I write poetry that traces the ways people assign and inhabit various racial identities, and how these group identities have shaped my experience of community, as well as my understanding of individual and collective mental health. ¶ Sonnet L'Abbé teaches in the English Department and the Creative Writing and Journalism Department at VIU. They write about the poetics of scientific observation, and about gender, racial and national identities in the settler-colonial project called Canada. ¶ Philosophy Café is a space for the friendly discussion and clarification of ideas.
