This year, the design challenge is to build a moveable bridge structure to facilitate a tram route over a canal that splits the downtown of the historic city of Trantor. The scenario: The city of Trantor has experienced high growth over the last decade and is undergoing a modernization of its central downtown core with an eye towards improving its livability. Its city council has decided to replace the current wooden crossing of the canal with a tram line to integrate the transit system on both sides of the canal. It is believed that this line will also better connect the central city region, and the council is keen to do so sustainably. The surrounding area on both sides of the canal is the historic center of the city, and is richly populated with small, street side businesses. The population is keen to use the numerous cycling and walking routes in place, and there is an intercity route that runs parallel to the canal along its entire length. The first-year engineering students are working in teams and representing different firms competing for the project. The goal of each team is to build a prototype that demonstrates their vision for the bridge that meets the needs for the Trantor community. Date: April 12, 2024 (Friday) Time: 10:00am – 2:00pm Location: Upper Cafeteria, VIU Nanaimo Campus The Engineering Transfer Diploma / Certificate program and its students would like to give special recognition to Herold Engineering Ltd, Helijet International, and the Engineers and Geoscientists of BC for their sponsorship of this event. \n\n\nNanaimo Campus Building Upper Cafeteria, Bldg 300 \n900 Fifth Street\nNanaimo BC V9R 5S5\n\nhttps://events.viu.ca/viu-engineering-annual-design-challenge-open-publicNanaimo Campus Building Upper Cafeteria, Bldg 300 falseaYqCFcQpUzxLBYhTummH26494
