From Lab to Launch: Commercializing Academic Innovation
Join us for an in-person session with David Schibli, Director of Operations at the UVic–Genome BC Proteomics Centre and CEO & President of Mirean Scientific.
In this session, David will take you behind the scenes of the very early stages of commercializing technology out of an academic research lab, or as he puts it: “building the plane as we are taking off.”
Drawing from his experience at the intersection of science, business, and innovation, David will explore:
- How to navigate intellectual property (IP) and funding environments when launching a company from a university setting
- Creative strategies for leveraging academic and research ecosystems to support early-stage spin-outs
- How to build a company that can generate revenue early, fairly benefit key stakeholders, and still remain attractive for future investment and partnerships
This session will resonate with students and aspiring entrepreneurs curious about deep tech, research commercialization, innovation, and startup strategy, and is open to the entire VIU community, including students, staff, faculty, alumni, and the wider community.
