Side hustle, Startup or Small Business? Explore Your Options in BC

March 19 2026, 1 - 2 pm

Join us for an in-person workshop exploring the different ways people start businesses and what the first practical steps look like when launching a venture in British Columbia.

Starting a business can take many forms, from side hustles and freelance work to small businesses or startups. In this session, we will walk through the available options and discuss the basic considerations involved in turning an idea or skill into a business.

Participants will gain an overview of the various business structures and the practical steps entrepreneurs often encounter in the early stages.

Topics include:

  • Different ways to start a business
  • Sole proprietorship vs incorporation
  • When you need to register a business
  • Basic tax and legal considerations
  • Resources available for entrepreneurs on Vancouver Island

This workshop is designed for students and aspiring entrepreneurs who are curious about starting a business and want to better understand their options. The session is open to the entire VIU community, including students, staff, faculty, alumni, and the wider community.
