10AM – 12PM

Film showing and book discussion with Coast Salish Elder Raymond Charlie.

About this event
Film Screening: Kuper Island: Return to the Healing Circle (Gumboot Productions, 43 minutes). In this documentary former students of Kuper Island Residential School, whose minds, bodies and spirits bear the scars of systematic abuse, speak out in an effort to end the code of silence.

Book Signing: Following the film showing, we are honoured to host Coast Salish Elder Raymond Tony Charlie. Ray Tony is an educator, artist, public speaker, author and residential school survivor.
He will be discussing his new book In the Shadow of the Red Brick Building (Askew Creek, 2022). The writing of this book became his own personal healing journey. In keeping with the traditional beliefs and cultural values of an Indigenous Elder, the author speaks honestly, directly and straight from his heart. "I will no longer lower my gaze. I will keep my head up as a proud First Nationals man. I have no more guilt or shame."
He will also sign copies of books for attendees. Books can be purchased at Books, Miniatures & More, Willow Street, Chemainus, and at Volume One, Duncan, priced at $23. A limited number of books will be available on the day, cash only.
