Welcome to the second installment of the Library After Dark. This time we’re Pushing Boundaries with a dive into our large graphic narratives collection. Join us for a fun hour where you get to explore our collection of over 2,300 items, learn more about the history of how graphic narratives push and stretch boundaries, and create your own single frame comic (no artistic talent required).
Did you know that some of the books in our collection include a history of women artists imprisoned for their comics, a collection of Underground Comix that were unable to be published legally, and titles created to support revolutions, minority groups, and more. These aren’t just the comic strips from the newspaper, they aren’t escapist comics or superhero issues. The collection includes fiction and non-fiction, all genres and walks of life. Books by refugees, by historians, by trans- and queer folk, by anarchists, by environmentalists, all ready to be discovered!
Joining our discussions is Dr. Marni Stanley, whose donations are the basis of our graphic narratives collection at VIU. Marni is a now-retired Dean of Arts and Humanities and former professor English and Studies in Women and Gender at VIU.
