Feminist Free School
Join Professor KJ Reed for a group discussion on the politicization of transgender and gender-diverse communities, with a particular focus on youth. We’ll talk about how trans and gender-diverse folks are positioned in media and by politicians, the language that is used in political debates, and what affect this all has on trans individuals and society overall. This session will not debate trans rights, rather focus on the often harmful effects of politicization.
Participants are asked to pre-read a short blog article to help inform discussion: The real threat to gender-diverse children is the politicization of care issues like puberty blockers and detransition
Admission is free, but registration is required.
KJ Reed (they/them) is a Professor of Studies in Women and Gender in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities at Vancouver Island University. Feminist Free School is an initiative of the Department of Studies in Women and Gender at Vancouver Island University. Our events bring campus and broader community members together to talk about issues that matter. This is not a lecture series; participants should come prepared to learn together through group discussion.
