Philosophy Café: Philosophy Now and the Question of Solidarity Today

February 25 2026, 5 - 6:30 pm

How do we practice solidarity in times of oppression, violence, and genocide?

What are our ethical and political response-abilities? How can we come together in solidarity with all who advocate for justice in the face of oppression – settler colonialism, white supremacy, state violence, militarism, cisheteropatriarchy, racial capitalism, ableism, etc. – in our shared and interconnected world?

Together, we will engage in philosophical interView to address and respond to these pressing questions and issues of our time drawing on our experience with solidarity activism in our local and transnational contexts.

Dr Magnolia Pauker is an undisciplined scholar, Professor of Studies in Women and Gender at VIU and co-founder of Transnational Feminist Partnerships for Collective Liberation with Sudanese Feminist, Dr Amel Aldehaib, an activist project rooted in solidarity as the political practice of decolonial love and collective liberation.

Sara Kishawi is a Palestinian community organizer and Sociology graduate from VIU. Originally from Gaza, she has been a leading voice in campus and community organizing, and served as the spokesperson for the VIU Palestinian Solidarity Encampment. Through rallies, protests, and public talks, she works to raise awareness about the genocide in Gaza and encourages others to take meaningful action in support of Palestinian human rights.
