¶ In both Canada and the United States, immigration has become a hot button topic in politics. For some Canadians, the question is "Who gets in?" These concerns are the very same voiced over one hundred years ago. There are parallels — to know the past will better inform the present. Imogene Lim reflects in part the circumstances of her family’s arrival in Canada in the late 19th and early 20th centuries as an entry point to this broader discussion of immigration, citizenship, and Canadian identity.
¶ Imogene Lim is a recently retired professor of Anthropology and Global Studies at VIU. Much of her current work involves communities on Vancouver Island associated with early Asian Canadians. Family documents continue to serve as a source of inspiration and research; they are a reminder that she is a lo wah kiu descendant.
