New academic integrity policy moves from enforcement to nurturing

I hope that someday we can live in a world without plagiarism. You may say that I’m a dreamer. But I’m not the only one. [1]

Are you aware that in May 2021 VIU Senate approved revisions to our academic integrity policies and procedures? This is Policy 96.01 & Procedure 96.01.001: Academic Integrity.

The new procedure is a marked departure from our old “Student Academic Code of Conduct” in that it differentiates between “poor academic practice” and intentional “cheating,” focuses more on “corrective action” than “discipline,” and generally emphasizes our collective responsibility to strive to exemplify integrity in everything we do.

As the policy states, VIU upholds the International Center for Academic Integrity definition of academic integrity as “a commitment to the fundamental values of honesty, trust, fairness, respect, and responsibility,” and VIU is confident that its students and employees intrinsically embody these values.

As part of our ongoing responsibility to ensure that these values are embedded in our academic culture, the Academic Integrity Working Group will soon be undertaking an education and promotion campaign. Please stay tuned – we will invite students to get involved to help us develop ways to encourage all of us to embrace and foster academic integrity throughout the institution.

In the meantime, check out this meme contest from our friends at Langara College.
