Together we can forge gender equality.
Join the VIU Faculty Association and VIU Students’ Union on Monday, March 9 from 11:30 am to 2:30 pm outside the VIU cafeteria and in the Royal Arbutus Room for an International Women’s Day celebration. The day will feature arts activities, a dance workshop, guest speakers, panel discussion and refreshments.
Arts activities
Guests can take part in free, outdoor arts activities at our all-welcome information table just outside the main cafeteria doors. Come receive a flower, write a message and learn about the theme of this year’s annual global event: give to gain: “As individuals, giving support means calling out stereotypes, challenging discrimination, questioning bias, celebrating women’s success and more.” The international campaign asks that we all give support to gain advancement for women and girls.
Panel discussion and dance workshop
From 12 to 2 pm in the Royal Arbutus Room, a panel presentation event will feature student presenters and keynote speaker Elizabeth Lorenz on the Hope for Youth bakery school in Uganda. Elizabeth will share photos and stories about this project that builds hope, empowers youth and creates change – one small act of greater love at a time.
Irlanda Gonzalez Price, Associate Vice-President of Student Affairs, will moderate a discussion after the presentations.
And then … let’s dance!
All are welcome to join a friendly and fun hip hop session with VIU student Hayleigh Warry-Gayton. Hayleigh has a passion for dance that began 22 years ago, and experience teaching hip-hop and jazz to many ages. Come take part in this friendly and fun beginner session that will get you up, expressing and empowering yourself through movement. No experience necessary!
Come take action with us to forge gender parity.
This event is a collaboration between the VIU Faculty Association’s Women’s and Gender Equity Committee, VIUSU and VIU.
