The Emergencies Act and the Charter of Rights and Freedoms

Responding to the 2022 Freedom Convoy and border blockades, the federal government invoked the Emergencies Act, suspending Canadians' charter rights and granting the prime minister and cabinet immense powers.

A federal court ruled in 2024 the government’s decision was unreasonable. The government of Canada is appealing the decision.
