The Colloquium Series continues its exploration of enchantments and delusions this season with the English Department's resident Occult Studies expert Dr. Janet Grafton presenting "WitchTalk: Voicing Power and Magic in Circe."
Circe, the first Greek goddess with a human voice, is also the first witch in Western literature. Prof. Grafton uses Madeline Miller's 2018 novel, Circe, to consider the role of spells, songs, prayers, and political protests, as she links the reclamation of "witch" (often a gendered slur) with the rise of feminist voices in political contexts.
Join us on Oct. 22, 11:30-1:00pm in Malaspina Theatre for a ensorcelling addition to your spooky season. Tea/coffee, questions, and community to follow the 45min talk.
(The Colloquium is always free for any to attend; no tickets required.)
